The Son La Hydropower Reservoir in Muong Lay Town, Dien Bien Province, is likened to a "Ha Long on land" thanks to its charming river landscape and surrounding mountains. Muong Lay Town is located in the north of Dien Bien Province, about 103 km from Dien Bien Phu City, where the Da River, Nam Na River and Nam Lay Stream converge.

The Son La Hydropower Reservoir not only plays an important role in providing electricity but also creates a vast river area, becoming a tourist highlight of Muong Lay. Visitors here can experience a cruise on the lake, admire the beautiful natural scenery and explore the unique culture of the White Thai people, the majority ethnic group in the locality.

However, around June 2023, this area experienced a severe drought, causing the water level of the Son La Hydropower Reservoir in Muong Lay to dry up, greatly affecting people's lives and tourism activities.

By October 2024, this situation had improved, the water level of the lake rose again, restoring the inherent river beauty of Muong Lay.
